Containerised facility plays key role in Mount Eden Train Station construction

Royal Wolf has provided a fully functional containerised facility on site of what will become Auckland’s new Mount Eden Train Station.

As part of the City Rail Link (CRL), New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project, the Mt Eden project is an intense four-year project which will see the inner-city suburb’s train station temporarily closed until at least 2024.

With a total of 10 containers on site, the long-term nature of the project means the temporary container facilities are designed to be fully functional on a very limited footprint.

Five shipping containers are set up in a U-shape with a canopy connecting the containers to form a central courtyard area and a worker’s hub. Two additional office containers are located close by with the containers being used as administration areas, changing rooms and a lunchroom.

To ensure full functionality, Royal Wolf installed a 20-foot ablution unit on top of a 4000-litre relocatable waste holding tank to complete the site set up. A container stack has also been set up on site to house a time-lapse camera which will record the development over the next four years.

The closure of the station will allow for underground tunnelling and a complete upgrade of the station itself, with the aim of giving Aucklanders better access to trains and faster journeys in and out of the CBD.

The construction footprint at the Mount Eden Train Station will be significant as it includes the relocation and large-scale redevelopment of the station, launching the project’s Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), removing dirt from the TBM’s excavations, constructing new overbridges and connecting the CRL tunnels with the Western Line rail corridor.

Royal Wolf’s site offices and amenities are ideal for tight-footprint locations like Mt Eden and other CRL project locations due to the containers being fit-for-purpose and tailored to a client’s requirements.

The container set ups are expected to stay onsite for the duration of the Mt Eden project with more containers likely to be added throughout the construction process.

Royal Wolf is the leading provider of shipping container solutions, from high volume ?t for purpose containers through to innovative, tailored modi?cations.
