Container bridge at Burt Munro Challenge 2020

The problem:

Each year the iconic Burt Munro Challenge takes over the streets of Invercargill for four days attracting top New Zealand riders and thousands of spectators.

The largest motorcycle rally in the southern hemisphere, it has a strong local and national following with a wide range of exciting events, entertainment and, of course, some of the best street racing on offer.

Following the success of last year’s Burt Munro Challenge the organisers were once again in need of a safe and secure pedestrian bridge to allow spectators to cross the track to get a better vantage point to watch the racing.

The solution:

A logistically challenging and impressive construction process saw Royal Wolf construct a container bridge that went up and over the street circuit track.

Made up of two 20-foot units, and a 40-foot box with doors open at each end making up the main span of the crossing, allowed spectators to safely walk through the tunnel bridge to the other side of the track.

The result:

This year’s race attracted 550 competitors despite the weather’s attempt to deter them with extensive flooding throughout Southland earlier that week.

The Burt Munro Challenge is testament to the capability of Royal Wolf to bring new product ideas to life and delivering bespoke shipping container products for our clients.

The container bridge enabled the event to run seamlessly with hundreds of spectators crossing the track safely to see the event from the best vantage points.
